For my Organic Chemistry class I have to find an article dealing with the possibility of silicon-based life and comment on it. I'm considering sending my teacher an e-mail with this video embedded...
I'm going to try and watch that episode today (the Star Trek one, not Baywatch). Hee hee.

"The Devil in the Dark" was a pretty bad episode of TOS. Of course, they obviously had no money for special effects. There are actually several instances of silicon-based lifeforms in the Star Trek universe: http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Silicon-based_lifeform My favourite silicon intelligence is the crystals in TNG "Home Soil," largely because they called humanoids "ugly bags of mostly water."
